Following the example of my beloved [personal profile] merikuru , I set this community up to give my plotbunnies somewhere to brawl away from the rest of my random rambly crap.

Information on the latest rampaging plotbunny soon!

It's super effective!

*ahem*

You all know the story. Magnificent hero comes from somewhere way out in the sticks, wanders into a big conflict, picks a side (usually assisted by an attractive member of the opposite sex), displays and/or develops INCREDIBLE POWAHS of destruction, gathers friends and allies from both home and abroad, ends the war in favour of his chosen side and everyone but everyone falls at his feet and worships him, even the members of the opposing side who OUGHT to be telling him "yes, thank you for destroying our country, now fuck off and die in a fire".

Ew. So cliche, so stupid. So mind-bogglingly DULL.

Sometimes I get the feeling authors read "The Tough Guide to Fantasyland" and completely miss the point. Sigh.

Here's the plotbunny. I suspect those who read my 2008 NaNo effort, Fundamentals of Alchemy, will recognise the general idea. This is what I was AIMING for before Elly and Taren ran away with the plot.

~~~
In fantasy, be it video game or novel or movie, there's always the childhood friend or sibling who comes in about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through the plot, takes everything and anything the hero says at face value, and acts more like a devoted dog than an actual human being. They never bother to argue with the hero, or take a different point of view, they're just a sidekick or even worse, a designate love interest. (I'll have to find the Liimyael rant about DLIs, she puts my opinions into much clearer words, and with a certain sharp clarity of phrase.)
Never once has the childhood friend/sibling looked at what the hero has been doing in their time apart and been horrified. And some of them have plenty of reason to be disgusted, frightened or disturbed. Or all three.
So let's turn that on it's head. The sibling arrives to find the 'hero' has been fighting a war, doing well, but doing well in a very dark way. Developing weapons designed to cause as much pain and suffering as possible. Attacking innocents to demoralise the enemy. Generally being evil bastards in the name of a cause that isn't even theirs.
This could be fun~
